HP 8100 Crinkled Paper Problem

HP 8100 Crinkled Paper Problem by uestech (11/17/08 8:28 AM) reply + / -
I have an HP8100 that seems to cinkle only letter paper. Legal paper goes through fine. It seems the letter paper is crinkling because it is fed into the printer differently than legal paper. The paper makes it through without jamming, but I know it's going to jam up eventually. The tech working on this issue has replaced the toner cartridge, registration assembly, feeder assembly, transfer roller, and fuser. However, letter paper is still crinkling and legal paper is coming through fine.

I told my tech to run paper through and stop the printer to check the integrity of the paper at certain points. It seems to make it through the registration ok, however, my tech wasn't able to stop it any further to get better looks.

Any ideas anyone? This is a strange one.

Switch the paper in the different trays if you think its an issue with the tray to verify your problem. Make sure that the coupler didnt fall off the feed/seperation roller shaft. Verify the feed rollers are secure in there position. Open the duplex door and watch as the paper is fed in. Also your not saying where it is crinkling. Did the tech close the envelope clamps on the fuser when he replaced. Did he make sure the transfer roller is securly seated and the white bushing where in the transfer housing. Are you using refurb cartridges? Could be a toner seal clip hanging to low even on new one if refurb. These next two are most important in your case I believe. Is the image skewd on the paper? is the image straight and folded over after it hits the fuser? Try feeding it out the side tray. So many things to try I dont think its strange probably obvious just making it hard by replacing parts before you troubleshoot the real problem. What trays are you using also is this from tray 1,2,3, or possibly tray 4. You have given very little info besides the fact you replaced a bunch of parts without verifying the problem.

It is doing it from all trays, even tray 1. The image is on the page just fine according to my tech, however, the page is crinkled. And as I said before, legal is fine, but letter is crinkling. I am at the mercy of my techs doing their version of troubleshooting. So I am only relaying what I've been told. I've told them to try multiple things, but whether or not they do is up in the air. The toner cartridges are refurbed, because the company is cheap and rather use cheap stuff to further increase their maintenance needs. I am better at checking out things better than telling other people to check things, mainly because I take my time and the other techs don't. I will have to ask my tech about the envelope clamps and toner seal clip.

Thanks for the reply.

You need to be a bit more descriptive of the crinkling. Is it an irregular pressure crinkle? Is it even folds? Is the image straight on the paper? Which way do they run on the paper? I kind of doubt it would be the envelope levers. They lessen the pressure on the fuser rollers so there is less likelihood that it would cause pressure related wrinkles.

Where in the printer is it crinkling?
I'm thinking that it is probably in the fuser...
Try moving the blue/green pressure levers on the fuser to the other position.
Also try a different paper.
If this produces better or worse results, your fuser is shot!

Good luck.

Like I said in my last post, the image is fine on the paper. No folds. We probably got a bad fuser from our vendor, hopefully. But, again, I am only going by what my techs tell me. I have about 20 techs I talk to. A good portion of them can figure out stuff on their own. i need to get back to the tech on this one particular problem, I've been out of town this week. I'll check with the pressure levers, hopefully, some resolution will come out of all of this.

I haven't been able to get a straight answer on where the paper is starting to crinkle. So, I went with what info my tech had given me.

Thanks guys.

Where the defect occurs on the sheet is very important. Legal paper feeds with the 8 1/2 as the leading edge where letter has an 11" leading edge. If the issue occured before the fuser replacment I doubt the new fuser is the issue. One place overlooked is the facedown assembly where the paper exits. If one of the rollers is damaged it could cause an issue with the paper especially if one of the rollers at either end of the assembly. To eliminate this item just change the output in the paper handling menu to the faceup side exit and see if it exhibits the same behavior.

Thanks, I will give that a shot. I was thinking it could be the face down delivery assembly, however, my tech told me today, that the paper is now actually folding and the image is on the paper correctly, but where the paper folded on to itself, the imaged is not fused to the paper. So, this is occuring before the fuser. What I understood from him before was that the paper was just crinkled with the entire image fused to the paper.

Im not sure if this helps but I have ran into this printer that when replacing the transfer roller the copper spring under the transfer roller holder gets bent pretty bad and will hold it up to high. When that happened the letter paper and 11 by 17 is th only paper that jammed. Try checking to make sure that isnt the case. Sorry if thats not it.

I will tell my tech to give that a shot as well. Thanks to everyone for the replies. I am responsible for too many printers and am losing my mind. Thanks again.

Well, my tech finally found out what the problem was. Even after all of my "have you looked inside to see any problems. Now look really well." The previous toner cartridge was leaking toner a lot. What had happened was toner built up on the inside in one spot on the right side. My tech said he didn't notice it. Anyway, the built up toner was catching letter size paper before it went through the fuser. Finally working now, albeit with money spent on parts. This could have been avoided, but what can you do?

Thanks to everyone for their replies.

I just had this exact same problem. There was a pile of toner at the base of the cartridge. After cleaning that up, the crinkling persisted. I found that some of the toner had been spread to the front of the fuser. As it was heated by the fuser, it began to harden, and built up to the point that it was catching the paper. Scraping the toner off solved the problem.
