Laserjet 4050 41.3 unexpected paper size

I have a Laserjet 4050 that I am working on and it keeps throwing the 41.3 error. When I put letter paper in tray2, sometimes it detects it as letter and it works other times it detects it as exec and throws the error. I have replaced the back stop on the tray and checked to make sure that the paper size was set right on the tray. What is causing this problem? Thnx

Most likely the paper size board. That's the small board in the tray assy. with 3 switches on it that detects the size the tray is set at.

Thnkx. I have checked these to ensure they are in the right place and they are for letter and it detects as exec sometimes and letter.

When you said Exec, you confirmed the paper size board. You will need to strip that badboy down to get to it. H

Just had one of these last month. Moe is right (as aways) replace the paper size board. To do this take out the tray, put the printer on it's right side. Inside the tray cavity towards the back is a black panel with the switch arms. This panel just snaps in and out, remove it and you will see the paper size board. It is important to get the part # from the board since there are 2 types of these boards (yes I found out the hard way). I got my replacement board from parts now. Do you have the part number for this? I tried to contact HP about it and they said I'd have to pay $39.99 just to get the part number and price.

The lower tray logic PCA is RG5-3821

Is that for tray 2 or the optional paper tray?

If you still get occasional 41 errors after replacing the paper size board then the paper feed clutch arm on a 4050 or arms on a 4050T printer are sticking open because of the quieting pad disintigrating & getting gummy & when the arm opens to let the feed roller shaft turn around to pick up paper the arm sticks to the pad for 1/2 a second but long enough for the pick up shaft to pick up a second sheet of paper -- a mis feed.. After 8 years or so these feldt pads fall apart leaving only the adhesive that held it in place. You have to strip the printer down to the paper feed assy. & remove the clutch & scrape off the glue. This happens on Laser 4 & 4Plus printer too.
