Formatter boards. Problems like printer freezing

SEND RFU NOW on power up .ect
Can anybody shed any light on these problems.
I have tried removing the battery from the formater card
but no joy. Is there any issues with these boards.
Please help.

Hmm well I looked it up & to my amazement there is a service note for that problem. Its recommends the tech. examines the formatter board & look for a toshiba chip, if its there to replace the formatter board.

Heres what some of it says...

The HP LaserJet P3005 Printer Series (all bundles) has the potential to start up with a Blank Display or INFLATE FAILURE – RESEND RFU UPGRADE error message. The error appears to be caused by a Toshiba NAND Flash chip on the formatter board. To date, approximately 25% of the P3005's shipped within the specified serial number range have the Toshiba NAND part.

Q7815A Serial range starting at CND00000 & ending at CNF99999

You got 2 options
- Use this link to find a service provider near you (you might have to tell them theres a service note on this, as not all places may be aware its out there)
http://hp.infonow.net

or Call it into HP yourself 1-800-HP-INVENT (1-800-474-6836).

*Basically a service note is a free repair even if the machines warranty has expired as long as it has the failure description & falls within the serial number range. Some notes don't pay for onsite repairs, so that might be extra if a provider offers it (just to warn you, not sure if this has onsite or not)

Thanks Sharpie for the reply. I cant see any toshiba
chips on the boards and the serial numbers on the printers
i have are in the format of eg CNF1T68656 . I am not sure
if it is the last 5 digits are the revalant ones.
Anybody out there have any more info.

Heres a Pic I found, the chip is covered by a label (which may look different then the label pictured). Should help you w/ the location of the chip in question.

my chip is very difficult to read but i do not see the word 'toshiba' on it. i do see a big 'ST' on it. is this a toshiba chip?

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Sharpie (4/8/08 4:56 AM) reply + / -
Well from your earlier post your serial # does fall within the list covered by the service note.

Either way the formatter is bad & needs replaced. Not sure on the chip if that ST is the toshiba chip or not, I'd guess you'd still be able to get the machine covered by the service note anyway being you got the same error as it describes.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by cscotech (4/8/08 12:18 PM) reply + / -
well i called the 800 number and had to give them $40 just to talk to a tech about the service note since the printer was out of warranty. the 'st' is NOT a toshiba chip and is not covered under the service note. so i guess i'm off to ebay to try and find a formatter board.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by johntriumph (4/8/08 3:41 PM) reply + / -
An ST Chip means its a THOMSON SEMICONDUCTOR chip
The Toshiba chip clearly says TOSHIBA.
I got a new board with an ST chip a short while ago
and the board seemed to work ok but the ones with
the SAMSGUNG chips have always worked consistantly.
Anybody ever tried to replace chips like these.
I wonder could a component level repair be possible?
Someone do a google on the part number and check
availability !!

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Sharpie (4/9/08 5:22 AM) reply + / -
Large companies might do board repairs like Liberty Parts Team, Parts Now, Depot America, etc (If they can get the chip). The thing with a chip like this is its impossible to hand solder it to the board, the connections are too close. It takes a special machine that solders all the connections at the same time. I don't recall the name of it but I believe they have interchangeable templates for different size/shaped chips too.

The formatter Part # is Q7848-61002

Re: Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Haelge (edited 4/9/08 6:23 AM) reply + / -
I have the same problems with my P3005.
Yesterday I have updated the firmware to the latest version. Now I have no more display problems, RFU LOAD ERROR's, or 49.4C02 Printer Error's, but sometimes the printer is still freezing.
I think there is a problem with the chip at the formatter board. Now I will replace the NAND flash chip, if I can get the chip and it does not cost so much. Removing & soldering are not problems for me.
Someone can tell me the designation of the correct chip?

Sorry for my bad english :)

Is there special equipment necessary for replacing
these chips? Can a special head for a soldiering
iron be got . I have about 6 of these boards
with this problem . Let me know how you get on

6 Bords???? wow...

Of course you need special equipment to replace these chips.
If you want take a look at the COOPER Hand Tools Website
http://www.cooperhandtools.com/brands/weller/index.cfm
or if you can read german here:
http://www.jbctools.com/pdf/Catalogos/Advanced/CatAdvAle.pdf

You can find there a lot of special desoldering heads.

I too have problem with this model. Didn't get Resend or RFU error but 49. 4C2D, 4C02 error. Printer freezes, cant get into control panel, sometimes MEM TEST FAILURE REPLACE DIMM 0, WARR. expired in March. Serial number in range. Jumped through hoops with HP & of course it wouldn't fail. And for only $369 I could swap for another one. Have already upgraded firmware, put back in service and same problems. MEM error again. Does anyone have service note number or info? Any help appreciated.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Sharpie (edited 4/9/08 6:27 PM) reply + / -
Hey Walliec,

Sorry I don't have access to service notes anymore. Most of them are considered confidential & not for public viewing anyway so you might not get anyone to give it out. You'd have to meet the failure problems listed anyway to qualify. Even though you might fall into that serial # range it doesn't mean you have a board w/ that failing Toshiba chip.

You sure it says DIMM 0 & not DIMM 1? Theres only 1 expanison slot available for memory on the formatter board. If it is saying DIMM 1 then I'd try replacing the memory stick first. DIMM 1 is the only one listed in the service manual

If it does say DIMM 0 you're probably needing a replacement formatter board, but try a NVRAM reset first, see Steven's post here for how to do that. (note that the reset will clear page counts & serial # from the board, if a network model it'll clear the network settings too)

I believe those surface mounted chips are put on at the factory using hot air. I'm wondering if maybe they are suffering from the same cold solder problems as the 610N and 615N JetDirect cards have. The boards are basically dead, so you have nothing to lose by trying the following experiment which has brought back quite a few JetDirect cards from the dead. Get a Hair Dryer. You'll need a good one that puts out a lot of heat. The one I use puts out over 1200 degrees, but people have had success using ordinary hair dryers. Heat the chip for 10-15 seconds, moving the hair dryer around the chip. Somebody please try it and report back.

If my printer were switched off for a long time, it works for 5 minutes. Then he is still freezes.
Is the "printer freezing problem" also a problem from the formatter board?

My Printer: Q7812A
S/N: CNCW6CY11V
Formatter P/N: Q7847-60001

Someone can tell me whether it is possible to be inserted a new board with Part Q7848-61002?

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (4/10/08 5:17 AM) reply + / -
Folks there is a service note for this and the best action is not to call hp but contact an authorized service provider in your area and talk to them and see if you bring it in will take care of the repair under the service note. If they do you pay nothing and the service provider gets a small fee from hp which also provides the replacment part at no charge. Trying to repair these yourself or calling hp directly in my opinion is a waste of time since hp's customer care has gone down in the toilet in recent months.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by johntriumph (4/10/08 7:46 AM) reply + / -
I Am going to try the hair drier trick when i get the next one
in for repair. Even better still i can use a heat gun.
I do not think it will work because the chip is a samsung
chip on later boards. It looks like the toshiba chip had
a fault. I let ye know ho i get on.

Ok... first I will look how much cost a new "7847-board"

unfortunately the printer is out of warranty :(

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Sharpie (4/10/08 12:39 PM) reply + / -
service notes cover machines even if out of warranty so it's always worth a shot to try. Like DMZ said you'll get better results by contacting an authorized dealer. Sometimes you can get someone from HP to help but it can take time.

Try this link for finding a dealer near you.

Hi,

I called an authorized service provider. He told me that I must pay for a new board (140€), because the warranty has expired.

Nice HP-Service here in Germany :( .

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (4/11/08 5:29 AM) reply + / -
Try another service provider until you find one that will look up the service note. I would also tell them that you will be reporting back to hp those providers who refused to honor the service note. There are good providers and bad providers. If you find one that will do the repair as per the service note, then contact hp with the names of the ones that would not do the repair. Keep in mind I do not know if the service note is good in Germany. I know it is good in the US.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by hp-printer-dave (4/11/08 10:51 PM) reply + / -
Boy, I am going to try the heat gun or hair dryer on my jetdirect 615 cards that are out of the serial # range for the free HP replacement & report back on it. I don't have any 3005's to work on but, I know a hospital that recently bought about 30 of them. --- On calling HP direct --- in 13 years I have only once paid them for support & it was a joke. A good warranty center can run a claim on a printer with no human interaction & it is a lot easier for them to help you & get paid from HP for it. Years ago there was a known issue like this that if you called HP they said they didn't know about any service note & sorry it was out of warranty & some local warranty centers said the same thing. Sadly, many customers believe this stuff. We became HP certified in the product with the problems & shortly after started helping a very big company with THOUSANDS of failing equipment. Other warranty centers were already charging them for the repairs & when we came in we were able to fix you guessed it -- THOUSANDS of machines at no cost to the customer & HP picked up the whole tab. We were tickled pink or green $$ you might say & so was our customer. They trusted HP then & bought another $ million worth of HP stuff. This issue should also be covered.

Re: Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Haelge (4/12/08 4:14 AM) reply + / -
I called 5 service centers. They all meant that I have to pay for the new board.
So I called HP directly. HP said the same. The service coworker spoke only broken German. I think the callcenter is somewhere in Eastern Europe. *grr*
But he was friendly. He said there is a problem with the formatter board and gave me also the part number of a new board. He meant I can replace the old Q7847-60001 with the new Q7848-61002 board.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by dmzcompute (4/12/08 7:04 AM) reply + / -
This is the document number:

c01215806

As I said I am in the US and it is good here. I can not say about other countries or locations. Try to find a service provider who will submit a service note warranty claim using that document number and tell them you will replace the part and bring them the old part when you pickup the warranty part. This way they have nothing to lose and will get a small fee from hp for just doing 20 minutes of computer work. The other thing you can do is write to the hp headquarters in the US and tell them that a friend of yours who is an hp tech told you of this document number, but his company can not service yours and when you tried a few authorized providers they refused saying you had to pay. Ask them in the letter what gives that some people get the item repaired for free even if the warranty has expired and others have to pay. Seems like a double standard and maybe a class action lawsuit will help hp treat all customers the same. You may get a response from them. They know of the issue since approximately 25% of the P3005 printers that shipped during that time frame had the bad chip.

I have recieved a new formatter from HP under that service note.
It is a network/USB only, so now I have to get a new I/O plate to fit it. They do not have a board with parallel.
The new HP's for home use are a joke. Designed to fail, and shoddily made with too fragile parts. The average user does not treat these units with care, nor do they care.
Yes, by all means do inform HP of service providers lax in their willingness to assist. We who look on this as a career, not just a job, know our expertise is a benchmark for quality work.
I do more than address only the immediate problem, and return a unit that is thouroughly and completely operational.

There is a board with a parallel/usb option
no network port the part Number is

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by MichaelTech (4/17/08 11:13 AM) reply + / -
No. anyone who says they have it does not. It is not available on any site I googled. The only issue I have is that the I/O panel dows not accept the new board. The pn# for it exists, but I was sent the plastic cover for the power cable.
No one will show a picture of this part because they will just send the plastic! If you have a P3005 that is shot, and it has a USB/Network I/O panel, {it unscrews} let me know, I will buy it.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by Haelge (4/22/08 2:52 AM) reply + / -
Hi,

today I spoke with another service coworker. It was a woman and she also spoke broken German. She told me that the service note treats only the rfu-error and not my "freezing-problem". In her opinion the problem is not the formatter. I think, she have no plan. Also told me my printer would be too old (the 1-year warranty has expired in dec. 2007????)and I must bring in the printer to HP. They want to make a cost estimate.
I throw the printer rather out of the window. I did not experience for a long time so a bad service. This is not a service, this is only shit. I will buy no more products from HP. Sorry, but I am very furious.

Now I will contact my local service provider again, buy a new formatter and replace the board myself.

Finally broke down and ordered express swap. Couldn't find an HP certified within 150 miles to agree to fix under service note. Could not find part online myself. After firware upgrade and clearing NVRAM still a piece of junk. Part number on the board is Q7847-80101 Rev B and sticker part number is Q7848-60002. Maybe next time I spend $900 I'll buy Lexmark or Okidata???

I have partner access to HP and cannot find this document in the data base. I have had a rash of these problems and almost all have been out of warranty. The HP solution to download the latest firmware is impossible if you can't access the printer, network or USB. Is this the current, correct document number? Thanks

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by F Rice (10/6/08 11:29 AM) reply + / -
Never mind, I found 3 emerging issue notes on this problem. I wish I had gone to this trouble before I changed 4 or 5 formatter boards out. By the way, the DIMM failure issue appeared on a new (May) P3005 still under warranty. HP is now issuing 61004 formatter boards with 96mb memory instead of 80.

I have a p3005dn which is throwing frequent "MEM TEST FAILURE REPLACE DIMM" messages; the issue is intermittent.

I have replaced the DIMM, but this error persists. HP told me via the phone that there is "no recall information for this product". Should I ask for a certain division? The s/n is cnd1sxxxxx; does this fall in the range (seems to) for the bad formatter board?

Thanks all,
David

What access do you have to HP? Are you a partner with access to the CSN network? I have 3 items from HP identifying this and similar problems due to a bad Toshiba chip on the formatter board. It is the small one on top with the sticker on it. Lift up the sticker and see if it says Toshiba. When I have time I am going to attempt to get HP to replace the 4 or 5 formatter boards I have changed out. Changing the formatter board may be your only answer.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by speckledpig (10/28/08 6:28 AM) reply + / -
No, I apparently don't have access to the CSN network (not sure what that is). I am just trying to fix this for my father-in-law's business.

I am going to try the local vendor route...maybe that will help push this through?

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by HP-Printer-Dave (11/18/08 10:20 AM) reply + / -
GOOOOOOOD NEWS on the formatter boards that are hanging up at the memory count or before READY comes up. It is the defective TOSHIBA chip on the top middle of the formatter board & usually there is a white sticker over the chip. I confirmed it 100% !!!!
But the bad news is HP will only give the extended warranty to the serial number range which is listed in a post somewhere on this site; I think starting with CND----?? So I called a local warranty center & luckily the guy knew how to look up service notes & said the note is DOC #C01215806 but my printer did not fall under the range & so I was out of luck. ---- So, since the new formatter is $296 from HP & they are on back-order there was no loss in trying the experiment listed previously. My P3005 printer would only get to the ready state once in 20 power on's & then hang when I tried to even run a test page. So I opened the right side doorways to expose the formatter & put a good hot blow-dryer up to the bad chip on the top middle & let it get good & hot & turned on the printer -- it booted but the display was lit but blank & stayed blank. I kept the heat on & re-booted the printer again & the display then stayed black with no light at all & I thought well I am getting somewhere. Then, without the blow dryer I booted it again & still got the dead display -- no light at all. I let the formatter cool for 3 minutes & re-booted & then got the blank display with light; then I knew I didn't destroy the board but the plastic casing above the formatter got a little warped from the heat -- just barely. Then -- by desparate means-- anothe re-boot & the memory counted all the way up & it went to ready & printed. Now it works on the network again & after 4 days it boots up 85% of the time & prints normally. BUT, when it goes to sleep mode it will not come out of sleep so I have to re-boot it then. Sorry for this long story but it may be worth $300 to someone else. Dave L. Utah.

Re: HP P3005 Formatter card problems. by opcso (11/18/08 11:19 AM) reply + / -
This problem goes way beyond the Toshiba chip. I have had replacement boards fail. As an authorized technician and large customer I have had this problem run up to the product engineering level at HP. I have had to replace 2 or 3 formatter boards under warranty so the serial numbers are way beyond that range and the chip in question is not Toshiba. So far no Q7848-61004 part number boards have failed. I have just loaded the latest firmware on to the 70 or so P3005 printers on our network as recommended in various HP bulletins and the jury is still out. It is no easy task to load this firmware, we are using HP JetAdmin software which takes a dedicated PC with extra memory just to run it. I feel sorry for all the one or two printer guys that are trying to deal with this issue without the resources I have. HP may or may not extend the warranty based on what I have told them, but it can't be just me complaining. Good luck out there.

I just recently bought a replacement (Brand New) P3005DN off EBAY for $450 & saw another 5 minutes later for $400 after I paid for mine. It came as open box but was new with the new toner & 1 year warranty. My bad P3005DN doesn't fall under the serial # range & I am teed off about that & I bet some other people are having to pay for replacement printers when their bad one is only 2 years old. HP I love your older printers but, hate what you have done recently !!!! Can you not make a reliable printer anymore ????

The HP P3005 models Q7812A and Q7813A models have a formatter board with a parallel port and no network jack.

The current replacement part number for this formatter is Q7847-61004. Note that HP's Partsurfer and other web sites are ambigious and/or wrong about which part number to use.

So, if you need to replace a formatter for one of the above models, be sure to order a Q7847-61004 formatter.

The previous post is correct, I should have mentioned that the part number I used is for the resident or on board network interface and does not use a separate network card. This is supplied with the P3005n model (n being network capability supplied). This printer has only network and USB jacks and the card slot is blanked off.

Any reason why we have to pay for this board when it is clearly a HP problem and that this happens after the warranty expires or one year after initial use? Anyone considering a class action lawsuit to have HP fix these at their expense? My board is Q7847-61003 formatter number KG3DTNM and I am getting all kinds of errors and or freezing at printer boot up. only printed 3,700 pages.

This printer is within the serial # range, although it has a Samsung chip....has anyone tried to unsolder the + side of the battery?

I tried removeing the battery for 10 minutes
no change. You would be wasteing your time.
The board needs to be replaced.

what is going on with HP. Their previous business class Laser Jets and plotters are the best money can buy....these new ones I like just as muck or even better when they work...I hope these new style printers are not going to be like their ALL IN ONE printers.

I took my P3005dn to my local warranty center & explained to them that there are "service notes" or "advisories" that HP themselves creates when enough printers have the same problem even out of warranty & the problem part should not fail. Mine had memory count failures & blank display & freezing up at boot errors. HP will let a warranty center get paid to fix these under the service note. I got a new formatter board under warranty & mine is running great; it is 2 years old with only 14,000 pages on it. Had to enlighten my warranty center though & wait 9 days for the repair but I am happy HP came through on it even after they said on the phone they would not cover it!!!

Be advised that the downlosding of the latest firmware as suggested by HP and carried out by my organization will not prevent these failures. I am continuing to report all failures to an HP contact but so far no satisfactory resolution has appeared. I have 5 or 6 formatter boards that have failed out of warranty and even one replacement board for a previous failure that also failed. So far no 61004 boards, all with 96k memory instead of 80k, have failed.
