HP Deskjet 670C by Sheldon (2/2/04 12:10 PM) reply + / -
Ok, I can't seem to get this bad boy to print.

When I turn it on it does its normal functions and fakes working. The green LED stays solid and the amber one is off. As soon as I try to print anything it will feed through a piece of blank paper and the amber LED will start flashing. After that it won't even feed anything until I reboot it.

I'm running Windows XP Pro and when I open the error window it shows that it only sends about 15% of the project to the printer (which makes me think computer problem). I've tried all the other cables in my house. It has brand spanking fresh cartridges (yes, the right ones)

I can't print from the command prompt and it just feeds a blank sheet through for a self-test. When I open the lid the cartridges move out to greet me but stay there until I power it down (which makes me think mechanical problem)

What to do?

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bert (2/2/04 1:26 PM) reply + / -
Disconnnect the printer from the computer. Clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts with a cotton swab moistened with water. If the cartridges will still not dock when the cover is closed, test them in another printer. Defective new cartridges are not unknown. If the cartridges dock as they should after the cleaning, press the resume button for few seconds and the printer should print an internal test page.

From my experience, the odds are small that you have defective interface on the printer. If the printer is still uncooperative, assuming that it will print an internal test page, test it on a non XP system.

Snne4 attempt a "self test" on your printer ...do so when printer is NOT attached to your computer.

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Denny Conway (3/9/04 3:35 PM) reply + / -
Karen: Be sure that you remembered to actually remove the blue sealing tape off the bottom of the ink cartridges. That tape covers the Printhead Assembly and prevents the ink from leaking out and drying out, while its in the box. Its even possible that you may have gotten bad cartridges or expired cartridges right out of the box. Check the ink cartridge expiration dates on the boxes, or on the cartridge itself. The only way to really eliminate a possible bad cartridge [even if it happens to be a new cartridge], is to actually replace it, or test it in another printer that uses the same cartridge and was working ok with its own cartridges installed. Unfortunatly, that is usually not practical, unless you know someone that has the same printer or uses the same cartridge in their printer. Its more common that you might have dirty electrical contacts causing problems with the ink cartridge/cartridges. First simply try cleaning the electrical contacts carefully and gently, with Distilled Water on Q-Tips or on a lint free rag. Its more likely that the electrical contacts on the ink cartridge, or inside the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly, may simply be dirty. With your printer turned on as normal, simply open the Top Cover and the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly will move over to around the center position. With the print cartridge holder assembly in the approximate center position, simply unplug the power cord from the back or side of the printer. That holder assy will now easily slide back and forth by hand and you can easily remove the cartridges for cleaning. Using damp Q-tips [not wet or dripping], gently and carefully wipe off the copper colored electrical plates on the cartridges and the electrical contacts inside the holder assy. Its best to use "Distilled Water", because it has less chemicals and minerals in it, than tap water and regular tap water can actually cause additional problems. Use new dry Q-Tips to dry off all the electrical contacts after cleaning...Good Luck! Denny Conway

I have a 695C and a 670C and I cant get either to work running XP - and both do exactly the same (which isnt much) Have tried all the suggestions above, tried downloading updated drivers, installing XP drivers, cables, new cartridge...
catridges wont dock after closing lid, printers wont print internal test, both 'load' paper when printing but stop and will only feed paper when shut down (which is the only option available)Do I have two boat anchors or am I missing something simple, as both perform in exactly the same way. Plz help, frustrated!

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bert (6/8/04 2:54 PM) reply + / -
Better than 90% of DJ 600 series printers can be repaired by doing one of the following.

Verify that you have good cartridges and the correct cartridges. Don't assume that your cartridges will work just because you refilled them.

Clean the carriage and cartridge contacts, i.e. the electrical connections as opposed to the print nozzles. Use a cotton swab and alcohol.

Clean the carriage rod with alcohol and lubricate it with a few drops of Tri-Flow available in a 2 oz. bottle at cycle shops.

Clean the paper feed rollers with a moist cloth to make sure the printer can pick up paper. Use rubber rejuvenator as a long term solution.

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by greg (6/8/04 10:27 PM) reply + / -
Hi Bert, thanks for your prompt reply. I have performed the cleaning you suggested, and tried a replacement cartridge. Alas, no improvement. When I send a job to the printer, it seems to crash as soon as the paper is taken up, stops, and the orange light flashes. I'm unable to do anything at this point, other than pressing the power button, the paper then feeds through, not looking as if it has jammed anywhere. Usually, I get the message ' this document failed to print' - troubleshooter doesnt want to load from the help menu either. I have tried the windows XP drivers and the driver from AKSoft. The printer won't perform an internal test and I cannot perform cleaning or alignment tasks. In all these cases the orange light flashes and it doesnt even start to load paper. When the cartridge is replaced, it wont reset when the lid closes either. I'm completely out of ideas, other than suspecting a comms problem because both the 695C and the 670C perform in exactly the same way. Co-incidence ??? I've not yet tried either printer on a system other than XP, but as XP comes with the required drivers, I cant imagine these printers would be uncompatible with the operating system.

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bert (6/8/04 11:19 PM) reply + / -
The printers will not work unless both cartridges are good. If a cartridge is not recognized (bad or not making contact) or missing, the carriage will not park in the service station when the cover is closed. There is a time out period after which the carriage will park if the cover is open, even if there is a missing or bad cartridge.

Assuming the printer goes through the motions consistent with good cartridges, disconnect the printer(s) from the computer and turn on the power. Press the resume button (a few seconds) until you hear the mechanism 'wakeup'. A working printer will print an internal shelf test page.

Same thing happened to me printer can print a test page (Disconnected from Computer) but when I tried to print from any application does nothing!

And yes, I downloaded all updated files, changed my cables, and cartridges NOTHING!

What else do I have to check? I even tried calling HP Tech support, and theyre no help either. Does anyone have a real solution to this problem? Or is it better if I just throw the printer out the garbage?

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bert (7/5/04 12:54 AM) reply + / -
Go to the Windows Device Manager and check Ports for the presence of LPT1. If LPT1 is not there, Check the BIOS. LPT1 may not be enabled. If all of this is a dead end, try the printer on another computer before trashing it.

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bruce (7/5/04 10:23 AM) reply + / -
You may also want to see if the encoder bar is clean. I have had a few problems with that bar causing problems. But as Bert said before, Ink tanks play a big part in seeing if its your printer or the tanks are low. I have been able to fix every HP Deskjet series printer so far, so most likely the problem lies in the computer or the cartridges.

HP Deskjet 670C & 695 CCi wont print the first line on page by xyte (8/22/04 2:13 AM) reply + / -
I have a weird problem for sometime now in Windows XP on the HP Deskjet 670C & 695 CCi. These printers are attached to two separate machines.

Whenever I try to print from any program say like MS Word or Adobe Acrobat 6.0 or for that matter IE6 webpages, the first line on the source does not appear on the printed copy.

I'm using XP Professional on both PC's. These machines are configured for dual boot with Win98 as the secondary OS. Incidentally the printers work fine under Win98 everything prints perfectly.
(Hardware is OK - seems to be more of a driver issue according to me)

It's just that XP has an issue printing pages properly. I'm using the standard drivers for HP 670C and 695 CCi which came along with Windows XP Pro.

It would be a real shame to switch over to Win98 everytime I needed to print a long document (that's what I'm doing currently)

Any possibility of alternate drivers that I can use with XP (I use the HP drivers under Win98 - the ones that came with the printer with no qualms).

It would be nice if someone found a way to fix this.

Cheers,
xytise

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bert (8/22/04 9:32 PM) reply + / -
The only drivers available are the generic ones included with XP. I don't believe HP has any intent to offer upgrades. They would like the DJ 600 series to go away so they can sell you a new printer. The only suggestion I can make, which you may have already tried, is to delete the driver and let XP do a reinstall.

Hi. I just put a new printer cartridge in (it's the correct one) yet the printer doesn't recognize this. I did not have cartridge for this machine for about a month and a half. Would that make a difference? The amber light continues to flash. If I unplug the cable and power source, the the amber light will stop flashing. However, as soon as I try to print something, the amber light begins flashing again and I nothing will print. Please help!

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bert (8/24/04 1:03 PM) reply + / -
Clean the carriage and cartridge electrical contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol. If that fails, it is possible that you have a defective cartridge even if it is new.

If the printer is making a grinding noise, clean the carriage rod with alcohol and lubricate it with a few drops of Tri-Flow available in 2 oz. squeeze bottles at cycle shops.

I moved back home from Asia about 4 years ago and have just got the 670C out of storage. not wanting to work. I have lost the manual - please can anyone advise how to do a self test on the printer.

Also when I turn it on, if i press the form feed button nothinghappens - and it just flashes continuously. Seems like a fairly terminal problem with the paper detection/feed system. Also cannot send print jobs to the printer from the computer.

If there are any common little problems with paper feed that can be easily fixed I would appreciate some advice.

thanks,

Laurence.

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bert (5/16/05 8:50 AM) reply + / -
The self test in initiated by pressing and holding (a few seconds) the resume button until you hear the mechanism 'wakeup.' Since the printer has been idle so long, I would do the following:

1. Clean the carriage and cartridge contacts, i.e. the electrical connections as opposed to the print nozzles. Use a cotton swab and alcohol.

2. Replace the ink cartridges. The odds that they are still working after four years is zero.

3. Clean the carriage rod with alcohol and lubricate it with a few drops of Tri-Flow, available in small squeeze bottles at cycle shops. If you cannot get Tri-Flow, use a very low viscosity oil.

4. Clean the paper feed rollers with a damp cloth to make sure the printer can pick up paper. Use rubber rejuvenator as a long-term solution.
http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/kkx3.html

5. Clean the encoder strip on both sides with a mild diluted cleaner.

6. If you have horizontal streaks in the printout go to this web page. http://h10025.www1.hp.com

My 670C and 695C with Windows 98 and Office 2000 use to print envelopes starting from left (return address) to right. This made it possible to start the return address near the edge of the envelope. Since I have Office 2003 and XP Pro and use their drivers, it seems they print rotated: starting with the right side of the envelope (address) which restricts the edge space for the return address.
Q. Is there any way to rotate this process again as it worked with Windows 98 and Office 2000?
Thanks in advance

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Smu (8/15/05 2:19 AM) reply + / -
Hi,
Thanks for the useful info already posted above. Question is, should the black ink cartridge click into place and then *stay* in place if the lid is lifted subsequently and the cartridge carrier moves to the centre, as the colour one does? I don't have a manual alas. I've just replaced the black cartridge in one I've been given but when the carriage moves to the centre, the cartridge drops forward away from the rear contacts. Is that just default behaviour when the top is open?
The printer also shows no sign of printing a test page - is there a trick to force it to do so when it's not connected to the computer?
Many thanks in advance for advice.

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by smu (8/15/05 6:45 AM) reply + / -
Further to my previous post, I've managed to get the cartridge to click into place. Didn't realise you had to hold it from underneath too!
But still no luck with the test page, so advice still welcome.

Hi Stephen - Wow! Those really are intuitive commands!! None of them works for me alas. I've now hitched the printer up to me XP machine and attempted to print a test page. Got a bit further - the paper feeds in as far round the roller as (I'd guess) the point where printing should begin, but then it stalls, the orange light flashes and it goes no further. If I switch it off at that point, it spits out the blank sheet of paper!
I've cleaned the contacts - in fact followed all the cleaning instructions given above. Is the next step new cartridges completely?
Thanks so much for responding :)

We have HP Deskjet 640C. It prints the sample paper print accurately (which is printed when pressing the orange light for a long time) and also the interface test is accurate.

But the probelm is when we are printing a document (other than sample tests) most of the times we will get the error "There was an error writing to LPT1: The printer is out of paper :Add more paper:" and the orange light starts blinking. Then print was stopped either in the middle of printing a paper or without starting( after taking the paper) . We have tried a number of times with good quality papers and catridges.

We found all the settings regarding printer are correct and driver is 640c.Reloading the driver is also giving the same problem.

pls reply the solution for my problem.

Remove the cables and then fix.Load the driver again. See that the printer door is closed while printing.

Hello, I managed to open my DJ670C in order to clean it. The printer had stopped printing because of a leak. When I looked into the Print Cartridge Holder Assembly, I noticed that there is a piece which has a rubber cover around a hole and moves down to let the ink cartridge accomodate and lock. That little piece is missing in the color cartridge holder. That愀 not normal, is it? Perhaps that missing part is responsible for the leak, but it was printing ok till then. Any ideas/comment?
Thanks,
Daniel

Hi, We're having the same problem exactly on a 648c. When printing a Test Page from the Print Properties dialog box we can print out the test page fine. But when we print from Word we get an "out of paper" errror and of course there is paper in the printer.

Anybody have any ideas. The Microsoft Office and HP websites return no articles on support searches for this problem.

Re: HP Deskjet HP 51641A by Jesse (10/11/05 10:02 AM) reply + / -
I have found the solution to many defective HP cartridges. Even ones that won't print when they are brand new. The 51641A are around 47 or 48 grams when full, or probably are near new and are not empty. If they are around 45 oz, they need refilling. Use a 3/8" rubber tube to suck a little ink out of the print head end to prime them.
If they are color then make sure all 3 colors appear. Don't get any in your mouth, use a long enough tube, cart held below you, sucking up. This worked great for me, finally after many cartridges and different types of cleaning proceedures.

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by jesse (10/11/05 2:21 PM) reply + / -
These carts are a pain. The HP 820cse has very rudimentary software for diagnosis also. Anyway I clean the printhead in the sink with hot water before priming them. If the cartridges wont dock there is a chip problem or its partially empty. Sometimes you have to turn the computer or printer off and then back on before it thinks straight. I wonder if anyone will ever make a responsible reliable printer. I could make one out of a typewriter with enough time.

HP Deskjet 970Cxi CARTRIDGE PROBLEMS by mogaka (11/8/05 2:11 AM) reply + / -
I have a HP Deskjet 970Cxi. When I put some of the cartridges I buy, they do not print, yet with a utility that comes with the new printer drivers I can see the ink level estimation is 100% or maybe 90%. Now cartridge shops have a disclaimer that they do not take back such, especially because on the box it's written "IRELAND NOV 2006" perhaps to mean they are usable well beofore this date!

I suspect the ink has dried up. How can I reuse these cartridges? Can I wet them or dissolve the plug of dry ink?

What is the best solvent for HP ink cartridges?

Mogaka,

You are in the wrong neighborhood, this is a 670C thread.

Perform the Blot Test

Remove cartridge from machine, fold a paper towel back over a couple of times so it is about 4 layers thick, shake cartridge up and down hard, shake it over a sink unless you want to clean ink off the floor.

Now blot the nozzles of the cartridge on the paper towel, for a black cartridge you should see two black stripes, for a color cartridge you should see three colored stripes, if you don't have all stripes the cartridge is clogged or bad.

Have you checked the expiration date on the cartridges you are using?

Are you installing new HP cartridges, or refills?

You may be able to recover a clogged cartridge by swishing the tip in a saucer with a very small amount of warm water, then gently wiping it on a wet paper towel, be gentle the nozzles are delicate.

And do not trust the ink gauge on the PC, cartridges can dry up from the machine just sitting, the cartridges are vented, venting is necessary to let air in so that a vacuum won't develop in the cartridge.

I have an HP 642C Deskjet and when I print with a regular black print, the print is easily smudged and smeared if you run your finger across it. What is causing it to smudge?

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by WimH (2/18/06 7:14 AM) reply + / -
If you are in need of a driver:
Go to www.hp.com. In the search-box type your printer type e.g. Deskjet 670C, hit go and you will come to a page where you can freely download your driver, or check if your computer has the latest driver for your type of printer installed.
Hope this will help you all.

My problem is with both 612C and 670C.
the driver disk that came with the printer downloaded nicely but when it came time to install
Winxp pleaded incompatability.
However I was able to download a driver that works fine as far as it goes, but does not provide a print-two sides option. In David progue's book "Windows XP Home Edition", he discusses the driver I downloaded, but he mentions in the Print dialogue box an option of print 'Even pages" ,"Odd pages". In the one I have the options are "All pages" and "Range". And Range means 1-5 or 1-12 but not 1,3,5 etc.
Does anyone know of a driver with a 'Book", "print both sides", or whatever, option for 600 series printers. These old printers worked so well with 98 and with large ink cart, I hate to give them up.

It is not necessary to install driver for your printer under xp. Xp come itself with driver.

Lakshmanan,

You need to have a color cartridge installed, it can be empty, but it has to be there.

I have a HP Deskjet 670C and for some reason I cannot get it to print colour. It prints b&w no worries but when I try to print colour it prints nothing. Can anyone help please. I have Windows XP Pro.

Thanks

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Stephen (3/20/07 12:36 PM) reply + / -
Lis,

Do the blot test on the color cartridge.

Remove cartridge from machine, fold a paper towel back over a couple of times so it is about 4 layers thick, shake cartridge up and down hard, shake over a sink unless you want to clean ink off the floor.

Now blot the nozzles of the cartridge on the paper towel, you should see three colored areas, if you don't have all three colors the cartridge is clogged, or out of one or more colors.

If the cartidge is clogged, then soak the nozzles in warm water for a couple of minutes and try the blot test again. A little warm water in a saucer works fine, you only want to wet the nozzles, keep the rest of the cartridge dry.

My encoder strip fell out while i was trying to clean the machine.
1. how do I re-install it
2. how do I remove the plastic printer housing so that I can get to it

Thanks

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bert (9/16/07 12:37 PM) reply + / -
I have some photos showing where the encoder strip installs if you need them. When you get the case off email me by clicking on the crossed tools next to my name. Tell me specifically what you want and the printer model. I tend to ignore requests like, "send me the photos" because I don't have the slightest idea what they're talking about.

Removing the case
1. Remove the paper tray. It lifts out.
2. Remove the two T20 Torx screws under the paper tray.
3. Remove the sliding paper stop. A clip that slides with it retains the paper stop. The clip is accessed from the bottom. Slide the paper stop out as far as it will go. The clip has come against a stop. Release it with a small screwdriver. Slide it out again as far as it will go. It will come against a second stop. Release the clip and slide the paper stop the rest of the way out.
4. Remove the rear cover. There are two small round holes in bottom, each allowing access to a clip. Insert a small screwdriver into each hole and push to release the clip, while pulling the cover away from the main case. Patience is required! Pulling it too hard tends to jam the clips.
5. Unplug the small flat cable revealed after removing the rear cover.
6. Remove the main case. Looking from the front, there are two clips on the left and three on the right. They are accessed from the bottom through slots. Release them with a medium sized screwdriver. This is a little tricky if you haven't done it before because the clips tend to relatch. Patience prevails!

Note: There is a black lever that is pushed when the cartridge access door is closed. When the cover is reinstalled this lever tends to get jammed. The cartridges will not come out of the service station when the door is opened if the latch is jammed. Take note of this lever while the case is off. While reinstalling the cover the lever can be guided into the proper position just before the latches reengage. An educated index finger it the best tool.

Bert,
I want to thank you so much for your advice on how to take apart one of my hp690c series printers. It was a flawless operation and the machine after much cleaning etc. works like a charm. I was able to figure out how to to re-install the encoder ribbon when it was open. When time permits, I will fix the other one. The only reason that I need the older models is that I have a DOS program that only prints on the older models (*.prn). It is a program for doing heat loads for air conditioning design.

I have a series hp2100 printer that needs fixing. The lamp doesn't work after I fooled around with the machine trying to figure out why the the scanner wouldn't scan. Also, the light never went off even after a long time. Any suggestions on hot to replace the lamp would be most helpful. Or other suggestions as to what to look for. I know how to take the monster apart. If I could just get the thing to print I would be happy. My main printer-scanner etc, is a model J5783 and I have a stand alone scanner Hp 3570c that I use for slides and negatives so I could care less if the 2100 does not scan.

Again, thanks for your assistance.
Hankus

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bert (9/18/07 7:26 PM) reply + / -
I assume you are referring to the PSC 2100 series. There are no lamps available from HP to repair their scanners. If you like to tinker you can get generic lamps at Digikey. Choose the closest RGB white lamp by length and diameter.
http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T073/2282.pdf

The printer will not work until the scanner is repaired of replaced.

Hello, I have just bought a printer cartilage, but i can't print any papers, i am just trying to print, the printer take the paper till the middel of the paper, and it never write enything on the paper, and it never lets the paper out... please i need help in that...

Re: HP Deskjet 670C by Bert (11/15/07 6:48 PM) reply + / -
Clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol.

Verify that ink can flow from the cartridge by blotting the print nozzles on a damp paper towel a few times for two seconds. You should see the ink flowing freely. If you do not, in spite of the cartridge being new, it is defective.

Printer gives error out of paper even when I reload paper. It acts as if it can't load the paper. PC recognizes the printer, not a reboot issue. It just won't pull the paper in and won't do a test print.
Thanks for you assistance!
